As many of you will know, I campaigned to remain within the European Union. I am proud to say that whilst I am personally devastated at the decision this country has come to, it is my duty as your Member of Parliament to respect the democratic decision of St Edmundsbury, Suffolk and the UK on the whole, to leave the European Union.
It is the task of myself and colleagues going forward to make sure, in this decision, we deliver the very best outcomes for the whole of the UK. We must also remember the wishes of 48% of those who voted, to remain within the European Union. I will work to ensure that their concerns are taken into consideration, as we withdraw our EU membership.
I would like to thank all those who volunteered and worked so hard to put forward the campaign to Remain in the European Union. Your tireless dedication will be remembered. I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to our Prime Minister, David Cameron for his excellent leadership of the Conservative Party, the Remain campaign and above all else, this fantastic country.
As we embark on a new chapter in our country’s history, I am uneasy of this almighty leap we have chosen to take. It is my priority to ensure the decisions made hereon in, are careful and consider all the factors.
Nevertheless, I have always maintained that Britain, with the right support, can thrive no matter what. It is now for me to work to deliver this, in the long term interest of this great nation.
