It is shocking to see the pollution in the River Lark that has been reported near Rougham Road in Bury St Edmunds.

The Environment Agency has informed me that their investigation suggests that an unknown substance has been fly tipped into a highway drain, resulting in discolouration of the River Lark for approximately 10km.

Anglian Water are working with the Environment Agency to understand the environmental impact. At this stage there is no evidence of fish being in distress, however officers will be visiting the site again to continue the investigation.

At a time when we are more environmentally conscious then ever, it is incredibly disappointing to see reckless actions such as this affecting our beautiful local environment. From the work I have done with the River Lark Catchment Partnership, I know what an important habitat it is for wildlife.

I will continue to monitor this situation. Incidents of pollution can be reported to the Environment Agency on their freephone 24 hour service 0800 80 70 60.
