190,000 tonnes of edible food goes to waste every year from retailers and manufacturers. This could be redistributed to those who need it.
I am pleased that organisations across the country have used Defra funding to redistribute surplus food and cut down waste.
We are now seeing the benefits of the hard work that has been put in, with new schemes diverting tonnes of edible food to charity centres across the country. Highly skilled teams are in place to find different, innovative ways to access hard to reach surplus food, that can then be redistributed.
We now all value food more than ever. Ensuring good food does not go to waste will require a collective effort and I am pleased colleagues in government are driving this agenda forward.
